Fundamentals of Storage Ring Design course

Sponsoring University:

University of California, Santa Cruz

Course:

Fundamentals of Storage Ring Design

Instructor:

Yannis Papaphilippou, CERN

Purpose and Audience
This course provides an introduction in the physics and design of storage rings with an emphasis to modern synchrotron light sources. It is appropriate for anyone with some background in accelerator physics and technology and with an interest on the specific features of storage rings.

Prerequisites
The students will be assumed to have basic knowledge of accelerator physics.

Objectives
The students are expected to learn the fundamental recipes for designing a storage ring. Upon completion of this course, they will be able to apply this knowledge in practical examples of storage ring lattices and sub-systems.

Instructional Method
The course includes four series of lectures during the morning, followed by afternoon sessions with tutorial exercises on specific examples corresponding to the material of the morning lectures. Problem sets will be assigned every day and students are expected to work on them after scheduled class sessions and return them by the next day, when the problems will be solved and discussed. One afternoon may be devoted on a computer laboratory, where the students will be introduced to simulations for storage ring lattice design. There will be an open-book exam during the last day. The instructor will be available at all times.

Course Content
The principles of beam optics, transverse and longitudinal beam dynamics will be first introduced. Then, the course will focus on the dynamics of radiating electrons in the presence of electromagnetic fields. Particular emphasis will be given in storage ring lattice design including linear and non-linear effects and their correction. Concepts of multi-particle beam dynamics and instabilities will be introduced and in particular their impact to electron current and brightness limitations. Basic design features of magnets and insertion devices, RF systems and beam diagnostics will be also overviewed. Finally, examples of existing and future storage rings will be presented including their purpose and performance issues.

Reading Requirements
1. The Physics of Particle Accelerators. An Introduction (Oxford University Press2003) by Klaus Wille (to be provided by the USPAS)
2. Synchrotron Radiation Sources (World Scientific 1994) by Herman Winick (ed.) (used as reference only).

Reading Requirements
Students will be evaluated based on performance as follows: final exam (30% of final grade), homework assignments and computer lab ( 70% of final grade).
