Introduction to particle accelerator fundamentals and basic beam physics. Emphasis will be placed on basic principles and their relationship to a variety of accelerators and optical systems. Practical examples will emphasize circular accelerators. The course will cover the basic mathematical and physical principles of betatron motion and synchrotron motion, as well as limitations on performance of accelerators in the form of limits on current or other measures of performance such as luminosity or brightness of synchrotron radiation. An overview of accelerator systems will be given, with emphasis on basic performance requirements. Prerequisites: College Physics and first-year Calculus.
